Sands of Time

Behind the Shot.

Embarking on my first journey to the majestic Great Sand Dunes National Park, I confronted the awe inspiring grandeur of these colossal natural wonders. Undertaking the challenging ascent to one of the tallest dunes was a feat, compounded by the relentless midday desert sun. The resulting image encapsulates an ethereal ambiance, a true embodiment of an alien landscape. With my tripod poised atop the dune and the camera angled somewhat downwards, the ridgeline of the dune meanders like a sinuous serpent, gradually descending into the sandy valley below. The sun's angle creates a play of light and shadow, half illuminating the dune I stand upon while leaving the other half in the cool embrace of shade. To enhance the sense of scale and perspective, I sprinted down the dune and positioned myself in the frame, appearing as a diminutive figure against the vast sandy expanse. With the camera pointed downward, the image excludes the sky, immersing the viewer in a captivating vista of the sandy valley floor, a surreal perspective that underscores the otherworldly allure of this remarkable landscape.
